Introduction

Abstract

Focus

Main focus area: Automated traffic regulation.

Specific focus: Automated cars having to pass a crossing (vehicle intersection control).

Restrictions on the focus area:

  • Crossing has 4 directions.
  • All cars are fully autonomous.
  • Traffic is randomly generated.

A multitude of traffic accidents happen at intersectionscitation needed. These are also the bottlenecks in terms of efficiency. Drivers can get stressed behind the wheel when approaching an intersection when it is not a clear enough situation. By making the intersections automated, user comfort can be greatly increased. Also society will benefit from more efficient driving past intersections, since emissions can be greatly reduced, which benefits the environment. Enterprises will also be positively influenced, since people will be able to get to work quicker instead of being stuck at an intersection.

Objectives

Main objective:

  • Finding the most efficient and safe way for automated cars to pass crossings.

Objectives:

  • Decrease the number of traffic accidents involving cars on crossings to zero and thereby ensuring the structural integrity of the vehicles involved.
  • Choose a suitable communication protocol.
  • Make sure the traffic flow is optimal, which results in less waiting time and less emission.
  • Eliminate the need for traffic lights, which also reduces waiting time and therefore increases the comfort of the passengers in the cars.
  • Keep in mind the perception of safety and the actual safety of passengers.

Approach

The approach that is chosen is simulation and research oriented. Most information on existing solutions must come from literature and ongoing research. By identifying pros and cons of the existing solutions, and efficient and user-friendly strategy can be created. This strategy can be simulated and tested, after which the approach can be optimized.
