This article describes how to have a robot be able the detect where the road is if its a poor dirt road. Basic obstacle detection is included in this. The technology is based on colour vision, and can give results at a rate of 8 frames per second. Note that the article was published in 2005, so new technological advances should mean that better frame per second can achieved by now.
